Population estimates for deer <br />in the area range from one deer per square mile during <br />the severe winter months to 7 deer per square mile in <br />the summer. <br />Cover is provided by topography, aspen and brush. Browse <br />species on the sites include sagebrush, oakbrush, snow- <br />berry, serviceberry and bitterbrush. <br />Elk <br />Elk are occasionally found on the C-22676 site. The <br />tract is considered to be within their winter range but <br />the vegetation type is not considered to be preferred <br />habitat. <br />Lease applications C-26644 and C-26913 are located in the <br />area considered to be critical winter habitat for ap- <br />proximately 200 elk. It also serves as a migration <br />corridor for elk in the area as they move south onto <br />national forest land in the spring and return to the <br />lease site and areas north of it for the winter. <br />An elk calving area is located on applications C-26644 and <br />C-26913. Two additional calving areas for elk are lo- <br />Gated near the tract. One lies on adjacent land directly <br />east of the lease site. Approximately 30 animals use <br />this area.
