Terrestrial Wildlife
All wildlife species that occur or are expected to occur
on the lease sites are listed in Appendix D of the North-
west Colorado Coal Regional Environmental Statement
1976 (NWCCRES).
Big Game
Only two of the ten species classified as big game by
the Colorado Division of Wildlife (DOW) are located on
the tracts in substantial numbers. Mule deer (Odocoileus
hemionus) sad elk (Cervus ela hus) can be found on
applications C-26644 and C-29613 throughout the year.
Deer occur year round on C-22676 while elk are only
occasional visitors. Population densities depend mainly
on season and available food and cover.
Cougar (Felix concolor) and black bear (Ursus americanus)
have been sighted. Both species are solitary, wide-
ranging animals, thus, concentrations of individuals
would not be expected. The Colorado DOSd has estimated
one bear per 5 square miles in this area. No population
estimates for cougars are available.
Mule Deer
Mule deer can be found fn moderate concentrations on
91
