lized by about 30 animals. There is a calving area adja-
cent to C-22676 on the north which is used by approximately
30 elk.
The Colorado DOW has conducted an aerial survey of north-
western Colorado to locate big game concentrations. The
area in which applications C-22644 and C-26913 are located
was flown in the spring of 1975 and indicated a population
density of approximately 6 elk per square mile in the
area of the lease applications.
Cougar
The only cougars known to inhabit the area are found
east of the lease applications C-22644 and C-26913 along
Milk Creek. The average range of a cougar has been es-
timated at approximately 15 to 30 square miles; thus
it may be assumed that the lease site falls within their
home range. Estimates indicate two to four animals in-
habit the area south of Energy Fuels Pit 111 along Middle
Creek.
Black Bear
Black bear moat likely utilize the lease applications.
The Colorado DOW estimates five bear to be using the
area along the southern edge of Energy Fuels Pit 1.
Since black bear roam over large areas in search of
food these animals probably wander through the subject
tracts.
93
