} • •
Mr. Dean Massey
April 26, 1978
Page Four
report on the revegetation, CWI will have a much better idea
of what sort of success rates were experienced with our
program. It is already apparent that some areas were
extremely successful and other areas, because of some
specific site problems, were not successful. It is our
intent to review each and every situation, correct any
problems and attempt to revegetate those areas again.
We will be happy to forward a copy of Mr. Flores'
evaluation report to the Mined Land Reclamation Board
for review. CWI will be happy to work with the board
on arriving at a seed mixture which will achieve suitable
results. CWI views its present program as extremely
valuable in terms of gaining actual ex e~rienc~e in reclamation
techniques for this area and w~el t ah t this program
should weigh very heavily in any choice of seed mixtures.
CWI is committed to a reclamation program which will
return a percentage of cover to the reclaimed area equal
to or greater than the percentage of cover which exists
naturally in the area. This cover, in most places, will
consist of grasses and native shrubbery. In order to
determine what percent of cover will be adequate to
meet this commitment, CWI will use an accepted line-
intercept method of measuring the cover. Pinyon and
juniper as well as native shrubbery will be planted
on most areas of the mine before final abandonment.
The bench areas will be left open and revegetated with
grasses to allow for grazing. The cut and fill areas
and refuse areas will be covered with both grasses and
shrubbery to the extent necessary to meet the cover
requirements. Current estimates are that approximately
150 plants per acre will achieve a percentage of cover
at least equal to the surrounding area. CWI will plant
at least this number.
At the time of final reclamation and abandonment, the
topsoil, which will be spread on the various areas, will
be tested and soil amendments will be added as necessary
to develop a soil capable of sustaining vegetation.
Concerning the question of irrigation, CWI intends to
use some method of irrigation if it becomes apparent
after our inventory that irrigation is the only method
which will allow establishment of vegetation. In those
places where irrigation is used, only enough water will
be applied to allow the establishment of the vegetation.
.~ lil ~~II I ~c,~ li
