After grading and recontouring the mine bench and covering
the area with amended, suitable top soil, the area will be re-
seeded on slopes ranging from less than 3:1 to 1.5:1 on the
highwalls.
After the appropriate grasses and shrubs have been pro-
cured, the land surface will be roughened if necessary to facili-
tate top soil adhesion. Some compaction may be necessary prior
to roughird the surface. Seeding will be drilled or.broadcast
and reked into the amended top soil. An erosion control blanket
(excelsior or hold-grc) Trill be applied to the slopes 2:1 and
greater and anchored with one eight-inch staple per square foot.
Grading and contouring will proceed during the summer; top
soiling, seeding, and mulching will proceed in the fall. The
following spring shrub stock and trees will be planted on the 2;1
slopes or less. Fertilization will be carried out by broadcast
during the late sprinE. The seed mix will be drilled on the con-
tours using a double disc grass drill with depth bands and
packer wheels. Watering the reclaimed area will probably be
necessary during the hot surater months to insure a good starting
of thicY, vegetation and eventual stabilization of the area from
potential erosion.
In the establishment of grasses, phosphorous levels are
critical and nitrogen will help to get the grass off to a gcod
start. A commonl;~ used ;ertilizer for leree grass areas in tt:is
re;,ic,n is pi~7.i~~.~iua Phosphate. ^_'his msterisl ~s c~~nonly used
at a rate of betwe%:•: ~''"-"'~:~ lbs. per acre when applying Ghe
