Carol Russell
-2-
June 10, 1983
Vegetation - Rules 2.04.1 U, 2.05.4 and 4,15
Hdequacy questions:
1. How many acres of previously mined land and how many acres of
pinyon-juniper woodland are in the surface disturbance area?
2. Provide a vegetation snap, pursuant to Rule "L.U4.10(1), showing the
vegetation communities.
3. Since most of the area is classified as previously mined land, it is
necessary to develop a reclamation standard, per Rule 4.15.10(1). Therefore,
the standard will oe based on the ground cover that can be supported by the
yrowth medium and the ground cover that is adequate to Control erosion. An
analysis of the revegetation yrowth medium is needed and an estimate of the
~ninimu~n ground cover needed to control erosion on the reclaimed hillslope is
necessary to establish the success standard.
4. The applicant has not adequately described the seeding and planting
methods. In what season will the area be seeded? Four different seed mixes
are presented. Which one is proposed? The text says seed mixtures will be
,applied at the rate of fifteen pounds per acre and seed will be applied by
broadcast methods. Using uroadcast methods, seed should be applied at thirty
pounds per acre. Fifteen pounds would be adequates for drill seeding.
Therefore, the applicant needs to clearly explain, in the text, the time of
year for seediny, the proposed seed mixture and the appropriate seeding rate.
As a yuide, the following mixture and rate would be satisfctory.
Type PLS Lb s./Acre
Cicer Milkvetch 1.0
Sideoats Grama 6.0
blue Grama 1.0
St rearnbank Wheatgrass 4.0
Western Wheatyrass 2.0
Fourwing Saltbrush 4.0
Indian Riceyrass 4.0
Green Needle Grass 2.0
Mountain Mahogany 4.U
Wi nterf at 4.0
Total PLS Lbs./HC re 32.27
5. The application states that seed mixtures may be modified as
reclamation progresses to achieve desited results. The applicant should be
aware thatpl; if a chanye in the approved seed mixture is needed, a revision
must be submitted to the Division for approval.
