and equipment out shortly thereafter. It was a couple o_`
months later than EFC resumed operation with their own mea
and equipment. In attempting to correct the deficiencies
left by the contractor, EFC proceeded to level the large
spoil dump to the west of the pit and cover the area wit`:
topsoil. Leveling of the spoils was done in such a manner
that the reclaimed area had a slope similar to those of the
surrounding landscape, resulting in the approximate original
contour. Spoils in the area under consideration were gr e ed
to a smooth at~ci almost .flat topography to increase their .
accessibility to livestoc}; following the completion of
mining and to assure that runoff rras minimized and that en-
site moisture infiltration was increased.
2. Topsoiling
Following the completion of final grading, stoc}s-
piled topsoil and topsoil being removed from the advanci-g .'
mitre was reapplied with scrapers until approximately 12
inches of topsoil had been achieved. .Since the final sccil
grading eras done with crawler tractors, a'fairly rough
boundary existed between the topsoil and leveled spoil. ?'he
approximate depth of reapplied topsoil was 12 inches, wish
subsoil being applied to even greater depths in certain
locations. The topsoil that was stockpiled was in storace
for approximately 8 to 10 months prior to reapplication.
The soil series covering this site prior to mining
were evaluated by the Soil Conservation Service for their
suitability for use as topsoil. The Abor Silty Clay Lo a-_
covered the majority of the site and was ranked poor as a
topsoil. Absher Very Fine Sandy Loam was next in abundance
and was also ranked poor as a topsoil. Only minor portions
of Splitro Loam and Buckley Silty Clay Loam were found c~
the site and their potential useage for topsoil was classed
as good and unsuited, respectively. Potential suitabili`y
of these series for seeding, grasses and legumes was lisped
as good, poor, poor and fair, respectively.
Final leveling of the topsoil was done by a
motorgrader to achieve a uniform seedbed prior to reseeding
3. Revegetation
Once the grading of the topsoil was completed,
the area was seeded to a mixture of plants that were reported
by University and Federal agencies as being adapted to t~is
