~ ~ ~ ~~
Mined Land Reclamation Division ("MLRD") at one
point prior to reclamation of the area drained by o /8p
the pond. The pond was not built at that time 7 ,^
because all drainage from the area was contained J ~/
in an unreclaimed pit. No discharge occurred ~ 3.,s.i
before the pit was reclaimed. Upon achieving ~ >2
reclamation, the area and configuration of the
drained lands had changed significantly. CYCC~~,
accordingly submitted a technical revision request r
to MLRD, asking that a different design be ap- ,rw~
proved. The technical revision was not approved~L 4'~sgl
by MLRD until February, 1982. Because of the -yv-kt~„e
short construction season, which typically begins '~L CCCd,V~
I in late June, construction was not commenced on
l the pond at this discharge point until the~~tsummer
of 1982. Construction has now been completed and
verification of construction submitted to the Div-
ision.
C. TSS Monthly:
1. The samples taken at this discharge point in March
and April, 1982 showed an average TSS figure in
excess of 35 mg/1. The comments above regarding
TSS Daily figures also apply regarding the cause
for the monthly TSS figures in March and April,
1982.
D. Daily Iron:
1. The samples taken for 3/4/82, 3/9/82, 4/5/82, and
4/13/62 were in excess of the effluent limitations
for total iron. Because of the high alkalinity
naturally occurring in water in the western United
States, most of the total iron contained in a
given sample of water will be in a precipitated
state rather than dissolved. A high total iron
figure will therefore almost always be accompanied
by a high TSS figure. The explanation regarding
TSS Daily and Monthly figures in subparagraphs B
and C above therefore applies to the daily iron
figures.
E. Monthly Iron:
1. The averages of samples taken in March and April,
1982, were in excess of monthly iron effluent lim-
itations. The explanation regarding daily iron
given in the immediately preceding subparagraph
applies to monthly iron figures.
-4-
