TABLE TWO -- HUERFANO COUNTY
MINE NAME COMMENTS ON FEATURES
Carbonado S: Northwest of the Carbonado Mine opening in SE 1/4 of the NE 1/4 of Sec. 26. One large
(Vesta No. 2) subsidence pit, 50' wide, 200' long, and 20' deep.
In Spring 1983 -- Two inclined mine entries were backfilled and a vertical air shaft was
sealed off with a concrete cap. The two backfilled areas were topsoiled and the borrowed
waste pile area was regraded to a stable configuration. Will be revegetated and fenced
Fall of 1983.
(Morning Glory) *: One incline opening and two vertical openings. Incline is blocked but underlies Huerfano
County Road 525. One vertical opening is a pit 15' across and 10' deep. The other vertical
opening is a concrete-lined air shaft 7'x7'x15' deep. No access deterrents.
As soon as final landowner consent is obtained, two inclined entries and an eroded air
shaft opening will be safeguarded by backfilling each opening to the surface using a graded
fill technique (riprap followed by spoil material).
Champion *: One inclined opening; 5' high, 4' wide, more than 40' long. No access deterrent.
Reclamation work at this mine, awaiting landowner consent, will consist of backfilling a
large eroded inclined entry to the surface using riprap followed by spoil material. The
backfilled area will be topsoiled and borrowed spoil pile areas will be regraded to a
stable configuration.
Cucharra Canon S: Four subsidence pits. One pit is 20' wide, 35' wide and 5' deep and another is 10' across
and about 10' deep. Both of these pits mark collapse around air shafts. Two smaller
holes are 5' across and 4' deep, and possibly mark collapse over the lower Cucharra Canon
incline.
Key to unique features symbols: Z Multiple mining zones
* Mine opening information
Reclamation and/or plans -- Table Two S Subsidence features
lists hazard abatement work F Mine fires
+ Discrepancy between two sources D Mine drainage _P 9_
