TABLE TWO -- JEFFERSON COUNTY
MINE NAME COMMENTS ON FEATURES
Independence S: Subsidence trench and pits. A trench 500' long, 10' wide, and 5' deep lies on the west
side of a sandstone outcrop. The impediment surface south of the trench is marked by four
elongate pits spaced over a distance of 260'. The pits are 20'-30' across and 5' deep.
*: Horizontal opening. A 50' section of the roof of the abandoned coal mine remains intact.
Present entries at either end of former drift are about 4' wide and 3' high. No access
deterrent. Close to Colorado 93 and Leyden Creek Road, but largely hidden from view.
Reclamation scheduled Spring 1984 -- The open adit will be safeguarded by anchoring a steel
grate over the opening.
Littleton S: Vertical opening suddenly developed over southernmost shaft of Littleton Mine in early July
of 1979. Opening at surface was about 15' in diameter narrowing down to about 8' diameter
'
at a point 25
below surface. Open shaft continued an unknown distance beneath this point.
O
enin
wa
f
d
p
g
s
ence
off within a few days and was permanently filled and sealed in Spring
1980 (under OSM's em
ergency program).
S~: Three subsidence pits 10'-20' in diameter and 3'-4' deep. May be collapsed features over
air and hoist shafts.
Sz: A person walking across the mine on June 1, 1983 fell into a hole as the ground collapsed
under him. The feature measured 1.5' by 3' by 15' deep. A fence has been erected around
the hole.
Mann S: Subsidence pit. A pit 10'-15' in diameter and 5' deep marks the probable location of
incline of this mine.
Key to unique features symbols:
Reclamation and/or plans -- Table Two
lists hazard abatement work
+ Discrepancy between two sources
Z Multiple mining zones
* Mine opening information
S Subsidence features
F Mine fires
D Mine drainage
-18-
