Colowyo C-1981-019
23 October 2006 ~~
Pg 4/7
Hydrologic Balance (cont): -The Stoker Siding Pond (NPDES 005A) contained water
approximately four feet below the discharge pipe and was not discharging at the
time of the inspection. The pond embankment was well vegetated and appeared
to be stable at the time of the inspection. No erosional problems were noted on the
pond embankment. This pond is not scheduled to be cleaned this fall, as there does
not appear to be a sediment problem at this time.
-The Prospect Pond (NPDES 007) contained water approximately four feet below the
discharge pipe and was not discharging at the time of the inspection. The pond
embankment was well vegetated and stable and no erosional problems were
noted. The emergency spillway is a riprapped channel. The emergency spillway
was stable and in good condition. This pond is scheduled to be cleaned, with the
sediment being hauled to the West Pit. An excavator was parked at the entrance on
the morning of 26 October 2006 but was not working due to snow.
- The Gulch A Pond (NPDES 004) contained water approximately four feet below the
discharge pipe and was not discharging at the time of the inspection. There was a
small amount of sediment at the pond inlet. The pond embankment was well
vegetated and stable and no erosional problems were noted. The emergency
spillway is a riprapped channel. The emergency spillway was stable and in good
condition. Goodspring Creek was flowing at the time of the inspection. The Gulch A
Pond is scheduled to be cleaned this fall (after the Prospect Pond), with the sediment
being hauled to the West Pit.
-The Streeter Pond (NPDES 001) contained water less than one foot below the
discharge pipe and was discharging from the weep hole in the pipe. The discharge
was at approximately the 0.06 line on the flume and appeared to be clear. The
pond embankment was well vegetated and stable and no erosional problems were
noted. The emergency spillway is a riprapped channel. The emergency spillway
was stable and in good condition. The Streeter Pond is scheduled to be cleaned this
fall (after the Prospect and Gulch A Ponds), with the sediment being hauled to the
West Pit.
-All of the roadside ditches appeared to be clean and functioning as designed at
the time of the inspections. No erosional problems, sediment build-up or blow-outs
were noted at the time of the inspection.
Backfilling and Grading: -The operator continues to finish the regrading work at the
southeast portion of the East Pit. The operator is recontouring this area, pulling spoil
up from the bottom of the ridge and grading it to its final, approved topography with
a dragline. The dragline has finished one cut since last reported, walking from the
north edge of the wedge to the south edge. There is still a wedge that needs
approximately 2 million cubic yards to fill. The operator has placed grade stakes
along the perimeter to show the final contour. The dragline was not operating at the
time of the inspection. The operator is completing this work as time permits but stated
that more shifts are being dedicated to the reclamation.
-The reclaimed portions of the East Pit are well vegetated and appear to be stable.
No erosional problems were noted.
