Colowyo C-1981-019
23 October 2006 tea--~,~
Pg 5/7
-The operator appears to have reached asteady-state operation in the West Pit.
Spoil from the current operation is being hauled and dumped in the middle of the
north side of the West Pit. Much of the north portion of the West Pit (between the
open pit and the West Pit excess overburden stockpile - Hink's peak) appears to be
graded at this point. This area appeared to be stable at the time of the inspection.
Support Facilities: -The facilities area was in good condition at the time of the
inspection. No problems were noted with the area.
- The Gossard Loadout was also in good condition at the time of the inspection. A
train was being loaded at the time of the inspection.
Topsoil: -The operator has finished the stripping topsoil in advance of the West Pit. All
of the topsoil has been placed in a stockpile just south of the East Pit. Grading work
on the pile needs to be completed and the pile needs to be seeded this fall to
minimize erosion and the loss of the resource. The topsoil stockpile appeared to be
stable at the time of the inspection.
-There are piles of dumped topsoil (enough to cover approximately 40 acres to a
depth of eight inches) in the East Pit that must be spread and seeded this fall.
- Some topsoil has been spread on the East Pit reclamation. A small area just north of
the 101 dragline has some minor rilling due to the recent precipitation. This area
needs to be repaired and reseeded this fall.
General Mine Plan Compliance: -The operator was currently removing overburden
from the B-Seam in the West Pit with the 103 dragline. The 102 dragline was building a
new pit road on the west side of the West Pit. The 101 dragline is in fhe East Pit
performing reclamation, as detailed in "Backfilling and Grading" above.
-The 1 14 shovel operation was currently working on removing the X-Seam
overburden of the West Pit.
- The operator was loading and hauling coal from the X-Seam of the West Pit.
-The Bower Brothers project has completed the bench at the E-Seam for the highwall
miner on the west side of the West Pit in Taylor Draw (and the highwall miner is almost
finished mining there). They were currently working on creating a bench at the E-
Seam on the east side of the West Pit in Taylor Draw for the highwall miner. The Bower
Brothers were just at the E-seam on the south end of the draw and will work their way
north, creating the bench as they go. Their current operation was loading
overburden with a Komatsu 750 LC loader into CAT 773D haul trucks. The loader was
making six passes to load each truck. The overburden was currently being hauled to
the edge of the Section 16 Pit in a large temporary overburden stockpile for final
reclamation of the Section 16 Pit. As the operation progresses to the north they will
short-haul overburden to create the bench and haul any excess to the temporary
overburden stockpile. The Bower work area, including the haul roads and fugitive
dust) was in good condition at the time of the inspection.
- The mining at the Colowyo Mine appears to be progressing as discussed and
approved in the PAP.
