2
III. COMMENTS -COMPLIANCE
Below are comments on the inspection. The comments include discussion of observations made
during the inspection. Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken during the
inspection and the facts or evidence supporting the enforcement action.
Freeman Gulch Vent Shaft
At the time of the inspection, the operator had 175 feet to go in order to complete drilling of the vent
shaft. The shaft is being drilled from the bottom up. There was no activity on site during the
inspection.
The road up to the site was in good shape, especially considering that there had been a recent rain.
Mine ID signs were up ai the appropriate locations and contained correct information. The one road
culvert neaz the site entrance and the two rows of silt fence were properly installed and functional.
Slope Stabiliri
The small slump feature in the paved haul road cut at tum number 11, just below and to the west of the
portal bench, has developed a small head scarp. The slump is of minor concern but the azea will
continue to be monitored. The two former slide areas, one above the portals and the other on the west
side of the portal bench, appeazed to have stabilized. There were no other signs of slope instability.
See s
The seep area just to the west of the utility bench was wet but not running. The seep along the road to
the utility bench, above the former slide azea, also was a little wet. The seep further up the same road
was dry. The seep azea along the paved haul road, just down from turn number 11 but above culvert C-
B5, was wet but not flowing.
Veeetation
Most of the cut and fill slopes aze moderate to well vegetated. Some slopes, however, have only sparse
to moderate vegetative cover. The access corridor on the pond C embankment, used in cleaning pond
C, needs to be seeded. The other pond embankments had moderate vegetative cover. The coverfill
stockpile has only fair vegetation on it, although no signs of erosional gullying were observed.
Several small patches of noxious weeds were observed around the mine site. One small patch of thistle
was seen on the north side of the main topsoil stockpile. A little thistle was also seen neaz the pond B
