Sedgwick County Road and Bridge Gravel Pit Page 16
112(c) Operation Reclamation Permit February 25, 2024
This division is found in the central plains of North America and is dominated by grassland
vegetation commonly referred to as shortgrass, mixed grass, and tallgrass prairie, interspersed with
evergreen and deciduous shrublands. The vegetation occurs on either glaciated or non-glaciated
substrates, rolling to rugged topography, and fine textured to coarse-textured soils, and natural
disturbances include grazing and fire.
Group G144 Great Plains Shortgrass Prairie
This semi-arid shortgrass grassland group occurs in the western half of the Western Great Plains
and is usually composed of Bouteloua gracilis(mature height 6"-12") as the dominant or
codominant species with associated graminoids Aristida purpurea (9.5. "-35.5"), Bouteloua
curtipendula(15"-30"), Bouteloua hirsute(10"-20'), Buchloe dactyloides(4"-6"), Hesperostipa
comata(1'-4'), Hesperostipa neomexicana, Pascopyrum smithii(1'-3',), Pleuraphis jamesii(11-
"19", grows in bunches), Sporobolus cryptandrus(11"-40", produces dense, sand binding root
networks), and scattered shrubs, dwarf-shrubs and cacti.
Ecological System 7310 Western Great Plains Shortgrass Prairie
This system is found primarily in the western half of the Western Great Plains Division ranges
from the Nebraska Panhandle south into Texas and New Mexico. It is the most common system in
this range. This system occurs primarily on fat to rolling uplands with loamy soils and is
characterized by blue grama. Climate, fire, and grazing influence this system. The short grasses
that dominate this system are extremely drought- and grazing-tolerant. In contrast to other prairie
systems, fire is less important. However, historically, fires that did occur were often very
expansive. Currently, fire suppression and more extensive grazing in the region have likely
decreased the fire frequency even more.
9.2 Site Considerations
During site visits, the vegetative cover is estimated to be approximately 80%which is dominated
by grasses. There are sparse shrubs as well. No other vegetation is present at the site. The
ecological system 7310 is capable of existing in the soil type in the affected area since it grows in
loamy soils and the upper profile (0-6 inches) in the affected area are loamy.
Z:lProjects&Sedgweck Countyl2023 Gravel Pit PermettenglPermet AEC
