Red Creek Quarry Baseline Water Investigation Section 4

4-5
DRAFT for review purposes only. Use of contents on this sheet is subject to the limitations specified at the end of this document.
4.4 Water Quality Sample Collection
Water quality samples were collected according to the methods described in the sampling and
analysis plan [SAP; (BC 2023a, Appendix 3.6].
4.4.1 Filtration and Preservation
Sample bottles with the appropriate preservative (acid or zinc acetate with sodium hydroxide) were
provided by the laboratory. The samples for dissolved analytes were filtered in the field using a 0.45-
μm disposable filter (Photo 4-5). Samples were placed on ice in a cooler after collection and
transported under chain-of-custody protocols to the laboratory either by BC personnel or courier.

Photo 4-5. Example of methods used for field filtering samples
4.4.2 Parameters
The analytes and method detection limits for the baseline program include biological, inorganic, and
radiological analytes listed in the Colorado Water Quality Control Commission (WQCC) groundwater
standards §5 CCR 1002-41 (Regulation No. 41) and surface water §5 CCR 1002-32 (Regulation
No. 32). Direct comparisons to the water quality standards are not applicable for baseline data;
however, the water quality standards indicate naturally occurring constituents that are elevated
above regulatory standards. The analyte list also includes cation and anion constituents to establish
comparison data between groundwater and surface water sources. The analyte list was reduced
after the first quarterly sampling event (3Q 2022). The justification for removal of selected analytes
was described in a Technical Revisions Letter to DRSM (Appendix D).
The following parameters were removed from the analytical suite:
• Total coliforms, phenols, and chlorophenol were removed from the groundwater suite
• Asbestos, cyanide, corrosivity (Langelier Saturation Index), nitrate–nitrite, foaming agents, odor,
and color were removed from both the groundwater and surface water suites
