Red Creek Quarry Baseline Water Investigation Section 4

4-6
DRAFT for review purposes only. Use of contents on this sheet is subject to the limitations specified at the end of this document.
4.5 Quality Assurance/Quality Control and Data Validation
A pre-defined number of samples were collected as part of the QA/QC program described in the
Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP) (BC 2023a, Appendix 3.6). Field QC included duplicates,
equipment blanks, and matrix spike (MS)/matrix spike duplicate (MSD) sample collection. Laboratory
QC included method blank, laboratory control sample (LCS), LCS duplicate (LCSD), MS/MSD,
surrogate spikes, and internal standards.
4.5.1 Duplicates
Duplicates were collected so that the parent and duplicate sample containers were filled
consecutively (e.g., parent bottle was filled then the duplicate bottle was filled immediately
afterward). This process was conducted until all sample bottles for the complete list of analytes were
filled. Surface and groundwater duplicate samples were collected at a frequency of one per sampling
event for each water source. Duplicate samples were submitted to the laboratory “blind” meaning
the sample identification number used on the duplicate samples and the time of the duplicate
sample collection were not included in the documentation provided to the laboratory.
4.5.2 Equipment Blanks
The only non-dedicated sampling equipment was the water level meter which was cleaned with
distilled water and Liquinox between each well. Equipment blanks were collected by pouring
laboratory-provided deionized or commercially available distilled water over the water level probe
and into the sample containers (Photo 4-6). The equipment blank samples were field filtered,
preserved, and handled and transported in the same manner as the other samples in accordance
with the QAPP. Equipment blanks were collected at a frequency of one per sampling event.

Photo 4-6. Example of collecting the equipment blank
