Sample Handling- Containers
Four-ounce wide mouth glass jars with TeflonTM lined lids will be the primary soil sample container. One jar
will be filled from each aliquot location to establish that equal composite sample volumes are collected. Once
dumped into the decontaminated mixing bowl, those individual aliquot sample jars will be discarded. New,
laboratory provided certified clean jars will be used to collect the composite samples from the mixing bowl.
Blind duplicate samples when collected will double the number of sample containers required from the specific
aliquot/composite location. The soil sample containers will not contain preservatives.
The rinse water samples will be collected in two, one-liter amber glass bottles with no preservative for analysis
using EPA Method SW846 8151 and SW846 8270E SIM.
Once the soil and water containers are filled, they will be labeled and immediately placed on ice inside an
insulated cooler, and chilled to at least 4°C. The containers will be certified clean and will not be rinsed prior
to sample collection.
Please see Table 3 below for a summary of sample container requirements, laboratory methods, and holding
times for the PCOCs.
Mr. Lucas West Page 8
Environmental Protection Specialist
