Instrumentation for field screening will not be used during this project, as commonly available field devices will
not provide a means of decision making due to sensitivity limitations. Field observations for creosote staining,
will however, be used for stockpiles that contain particle sizes that will not fit in a 4-ounce wide mouth glass
sample jar. Creosote staining is assumed to be black,tar-like coatings on the surface of the gravel or boulders.
Decontamination Procedures
Decontamination of sampling equipment must be conducted consistently to ensure the quality of samples
collected. All equipment that comes into contact with potentially contaminated material will be
decontaminated. Disposable equipment intended for one-time use does not require decontamination and will
be packaged for disposal as household solid waste. Decontamination will occur prior to and after each piece
of equipment use.
Decontamination of reusable equipment(trowels, shovels, bowls, augers, excavator bucket) will be completed
in accordance with Pinyon SOP— REM-02—Sampling Equipment Decontamination (Attachment 1)).
In general, the following, will be carried out in sequence:
• Dry scrub with brush to remove visible stuck on soil
• Non-phosphate detergent and tap water wash, using a brush if necessary
• Tap-water rinse
• Deionized/distilled water rinse (twice)
Equipment will be decontaminated in a predesignated area on pallets or plastic sheeting, and clean bulky
equipment will be stored on plastic sheeting in uncontaminated areas. Cleaned small equipment will be stored
in plastic bags. Materials to be stored more than a few hours will also be covered.
Decontamination water and soil removed during the decontamination process will be thin spread over the
ground surface near the specific stockpile sampled.
Sample Handling- Labels
In general, samples will be named and labeled in accordance with Pinyon SOP — REM01 — Sample Naming
Protocol (Attachment 1) with the following project-specific guidelines:
At a minimum, the sample labels will contain the following information:
• Facility identification and sample nomenclature as previously described
• Initials of sampler
• Date of collection
• Analytical parameter(s)
• Method of preservation, if applicable
Mr. Lucas West Page 7
Environmental Protection Specialist
