Table 2—NRCS Seed Mix for Thomas Pit#4
Pounds Pure Live
Species Seed/Acre
Sand Bluestem Elinda 6.00
Big Bluestem (Kaw) 1.65
Yellow Indian Grass (Llano) 3.30
Switchgrass (Grenville) 1.50
Prairie Sandreed (Goshen) 1.50
Little Bluestem (Pastura) 1.05
Total 15.00
ITEM 8.1 — MINE PIT FLOOR SEEDING & REVEGETATION
Following earthwork activities, the CONTRACTOR shall seed and mulch the mine pit floor and all areas
disturbed by reclamation activities. The specified seed and indicated amounts of the mixture shall be
uniformly drilled over all prepared ground areas in a manner that will produce an even stand of grass
over the entire area seeded. Seed shall be drilled using a rangeland seed drill, unless otherwise
approved by the PROJECT MANAGER. It is estimated that six acres (6 ac) will be reseeded by
seed drilling.
The following requirements apply to reseeding the mine pit floor:
A. Seed Distribution: The rangeland drill will be pulled at a speed not to exceed 4 mph. The seed
shall be drilled and covered to a depth not less than inch or more than 3/4 inch. The drill rows
shall be spaced a minimum of 10 inches apart. The seed drill shall be calibrated to achieve
seeding rates of 15 pls Ibs/acre.
B. Fertilizer: No fertilizer is required.
C. Mulch: Vegetative Mulching shall be done within the same day as seeding. Mulch shall be
spread uniformly in a continuous blanket over the seeded areas using two tons (4,000 Ibs) of
certified weed-free material per acre. Weed-free certificates must be furnished to
the PROJECT MANAGER. The mulch shall be spread in such a manner as to prevent
bunching.
D. Securing Mulch: Immediately following the spreading of the mulch, the material shall be
anchored securely into the soil a minimum of 3 inches by means of a mulch anchoring machine
equipped with large coulter-type discs spaced on approximate 8-inch centers. Edges of the discs
shall be dull to prevent cutting of the mulch material. In areas where equipment cannot be used,
mulch shall be secured by a shallow covering of earth or by embedding with approved hand
methods, including a straight blade spade with a dulled edge.
E. Watering: No water will be applied to the revegetated areas.
