New Elk Mine Bridge Repair and Replacement Project
arcadis.com
New Elk Mine Cultural Report_TB_Rev030722 NOT FOR PUBLIC DISCLOSURE 29
Smithsonian
Site Number Site Description Management Recommendations
5LA.14430
Structure: C&W Weston
Bridge; Through-Truss Bridge
at MP 21.06

Not Individually Eligible
Contributing to C&W
Restoration and Preservation; the proposed scope of
work to be conducted on 5LA.14430 includes the full
encasement of the west abutment and the encasement of
the east abutment bearings, the addition of a steel cover
plate to the top of the lower chord, the cleaning and reset
of bearings, and the installation of new timber deck ties.
These Project activities are designed to strengthen and
help retain the existing structure and avoid component
failure, with the goal of restoring the site to its original
form and originally intended purpose. These activities will
not impact the route or height of the C&W railroad grade,
will not diminish the structural or aesthetic integrity of the
resource, and will not remove, replace, or otherwise
significantly alter any other qualifying characteristics of
the railroad’s NRHP eligibility.
5LA.14431
Structure: C&W Railroad
Bridge at MP 21.55

Not Individually Eligible
Contributing to C&W
None; the proposed scope of work to be conducted at
5LA.14431 is limited to the removal of ballast from the
existing deck, the cleaning of deck drains and bearings,
and the application of concrete sealer. These activities
will not impact the route or height of the C&W railroad
grade, will not diminish the structural or aesthetic integrity
of the resource, and will not remove, replace, or otherwise
significantly alter any other qualifying characteristics of
the railroad’s NRHP eligibility.
5LA.14432
Structure: C&W Railroad
Bridge at MP 1.05 at Jansen
Yard

Not Individually Eligible
Non-Contributing to C&W
None; no work will be conducted on the bridge at MP
1.05; further, the resource is recommended not
individually eligible for NRHP listing, is likewise
recommended as a non-contributing element to the C&W
Railroad’s eligibility, and therefore does not require
protection.
5LA.14433
Structure: C&W Railroad
Bridge at MP 14.31

Not Individually Eligible
Non-Contributing to C&W
None; in its current condition, the bridge at MP 14.31 is
recommended non-contributing to the C&W due to a loss
of integrity and does not require protection. The scope of
work for the bridge, however, will include repairing the
damaged northwest wingwall, tuck pointing the existing
stone abutments, cleaning and resetting the bearings,
and installing new timber deck ties. These tasks will not
alter the C&W railroad grade’s route, height, or any other
qualifying characteristics of the railroad’s NRHP eligibility
and will help restore some of the resource’s integrity of
design, materials, association, and feeling.
