New Elk Mine Bridge Repair and Replacement Project <br />arcadis.com <br />New Elk Mine Cultural Report_TB_Rev030722 NOT FOR PUBLIC DISCLOSURE 25 <br />Smithsonian <br />Site Number Site Description Management Recommendations <br /> 5LA.7112.1 <br />Structure (C&W Railroad <br />Bridge at MP 12.02; Widow <br />Woman Crossing) <br /> <br />Not Individually Eligible <br />Contributing to C&W <br />Restoration and Preservation: the proposed scope of <br />work to be conducted on 5LA.7112.1 includes the partial <br />encasement of the west abutment in concrete, the <br />addition of a steel cover plate to the top and bottom girder <br />flanges, the cleaning and reset of bearings, the <br />replacement of the timber ballast deck with in-kind <br />materials, and the placement of riprap around the <br />encased abutment. <br />These Project activities are designed to strengthen and <br />help retain the existing structure and avoid component <br />failure, with the goal of restoring the site to its original <br />form and originally intended purpose. Further, these <br />activities will not impact the route or height of the C&W <br />railroad grade, and will not remove, replace, or otherwise <br />significantly alter any other qualifying characteristics of <br />the railroad’s NRHP eligibility. <br /> 5LA.7112.14 <br />Structure: C&W Railroad <br />Concrete Slab Bridge at MP <br />17.71 <br />Restoration and Preservation; the proposed scope of <br />work to be conducted on 5LA.7112.14 is limited to the <br />removal of ballast from the existing deck, the cleaning of <br />deck drains and bearings, and the application of concrete <br />sealer. Project activities will not impact the route or height <br />of the C&W railroad grade, and will not remove, replace, <br />or otherwise significantly alter any other qualifying <br />characteristics of the railroad’s NRHP eligibility. Following <br />Project completion, the site will be restored to its original <br />form and intended purpose. <br /> 5LA.7112.15 <br />Structure: C&W Railroad <br />Concrete Slab Bridge at MP <br />19.37 <br />Restoration and Preservation; the proposed scope of <br />work to be conducted on 5LA.7112.15 is limited to the <br />removal of ballast from the existing deck, the cleaning of <br />deck drains and bearings, and the application of concrete <br />sealer. Project activities will not impact the route or height <br />of the C&W railroad grade, and will not remove, replace, <br />or otherwise significantly alter any other qualifying <br />characteristics of the railroad’s NRHP eligibility. Project activities will not remove, replace, or <br />otherwise alter any distinctive historic features or <br />characteristics of the resource, nor will project activities <br />alter the course of the railroad or the height of the railroad <br />grade.
