New Elk Mine Bridge Repair and Replacement Project
arcadis.com
New Elk Mine Cultural Report_TB_Rev030722 NOT FOR PUBLIC DISCLOSURE 24
Smithsonian
Site Number Site Description Management Recommendations
5LA.1472
Artifact scatter with features,
destroyed after 1960 when the
railroad was rerouted;
confirmed destroyed. Not
eligible.
None; site is destroyed and will not be affected by Project
activities.
5LA.1522
Buildings (Penitente Sect
community) – two structures
and a cross near mouth of
Long Canyon that were
destroyed after 1960 when the
railroad was rerouted;
confirmed destroyed. Not
eligible.
None; site is destroyed and will not be affected by Project
activities.
5LA.2202
Artifact scatter with feature; no
artifacts or features in ROW.
Eligible for NRHP under
Criterion D.
Avoidance: site is eligible for the NRHP, but no artifacts
or features fall within the ROW. If all Project work occurs
within the ROW and the railroad grade remains on its
current course and height, the site will not be directly or
indirectly affected by Project activities.
5LA.5913
Building (C&W Railroad
Depot); in ROW. Eligible for
NRHP under Criterion A.
Avoidance: site is eligible for the NRHP, and the building
is within the ROW. However, the building is outside the
railroad grade and will not be affected by Project activities
as proposed at this time. If all Project work occurs on the
railroad grade and the railroad grade remains on its
current course and height, the site will not be directly or
indirectly affected by Project activities.
5LA.7112
Structure: C&W railroad grade
with 35 features (see below).
Eligible for NRHP under
Criterion A.
Restoration and preservation: the C&W railroad is
eligible for NRHP listing under Criterion A, and the entire
resource is located within the ROW. Proposed project
activities would repair 16 bridges and one culvert along
the ROW and replace eight minor-built features (i.e.
culverts) that are beyond adequate repair. The proposed
work is consistent with the Secretary of the Interior’s
Standards for Rehabilitation, and the railroad alignment
will be maintained. While Project activities are limited to
the repair and replacement of bridges and culverts along
the abandoned former C&W railroad alignment, the
ultimate goal is to restore the site to its original form and
originally intended purpose.
