New Elk Mine Bridge Repair and Replacement Project
arcadis.com
New Elk Mine Cultural Report_TB_Rev030722 NOT FOR PUBLIC DISCLOSURE 16
Smithsonian
Site Number
Temporal
Period Site Description NRHP Eligibility Recommendation
5LA.2202 Prehistoric Artifact scatter with feature; no
artifacts or features in ROW.
Eligible under Criterion D; previously
recommended that more data was needed,
but Arcadis argues that site is eligible due to
strong evidence for intact subsurface cultural
deposits.
5LA.5913 Historic Building
C&W Railroad Depot; in ROW.
Eligible under Criterion A; previously
recommended not eligible for not meeting
any eligibility criteria and loss of integrity.
Arcadis does not concur and recommends
this site eligible due to its strong association
with the C&W and because it retains
integrity.
5LA.7112
(including
5LA.7112.21,
22, 23, and 24)
Historic
Linear Resource
C&W railroad grade with 35
additional features (recorded
separately below)
Eligible under Criterion A; Some segments
and features have been previously recorded
and recommended eligible for NRHP listing;
however, as no forms are on file within
Compass for this resource, further
information on the evaluation of this
resource is unavailable. Arcadis
recommends that the former C&W railroad
grade between Allen Mine and Madrid is
eligible for NRHP listing under Criterion A in
the areas of Transportation, Commerce, and
Industry, and with a period of significance
between 1900 and 1970. Arcadis also
recommends that while many of the extant
features of the linear resource (i.e., bridges)
can be considered contributing features of
the C&W Railroad, others are not. These
include features that were constructed
outside of the resource’s period of
significance, as well as minor-built features
such as culverts and small bridges that lack
diagnostic elements. These features are
summarized below.
