2.03 Wire Enclosed Riprap (Gabions) . • A. General Wire mesh baskets or mattresses (Gabions) shall be similar and equal to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, Specification No. 250-001 for "Wiremesh Gabions" or Federal Specification QQ-W-461G for "Wire, Steel, Carbon" with Finish #5, Class 3 weight of Zinc Coating and shall conform to the following minimum requirements. Equivalent metric sizes and units will be acceptable. B. Wire Gabions and mattresses shall be of zinc coated wire, triple twisted, forming a uniform hexagonal mesh pattern. The size of the mesh pattern and the steel wire mesh shall be as follows: Mesh Size Steel Mesh Gauk*e Metric U.S. Metric U.S. Gabion Basket 8 x 10 em 3" x 4" 17 11 Approx. 12" b: thicker (0.1181) The Gabion selvage or perimeter wire shall be made of metric gauge 19- 0.1535 inch galvanized wire. The Gabion mattress selvage or perimeter wire shall be made of galvanized steel wire two (2) gages heavier than that used ~• for the mesh. Tie and connecting wire shall be supplied for securely fastening all edges of the gabions and diaphrams. Gabions shall be provided with 4 cross con- necting wires in each cell 1/2 unit high, and 8 in each cell one unit high. Gabions shall also have inner tie wires connecting the front face to the rear face at approximate spacing of 12" in both vertical and horizontal dimensions. Tie wire shall meet the same specifications for wire used in the mesh except that tie wire for gabion cages shall not be more than 2 gages lighter. C. Soil Anchor Stakes Soil anchor stakes shall be steel: 1. Crane rails of a convenient size (min. 40 lbs. per yard). 2. 2" diameter galvanized steel pipe conforming to ASTM A 120. 3. 3" x 3" x 3/8" structural steel angles conforming to ASTM A 36 or equal. 4. Used rails, pipe or angles may be used provided the material is not rusted or damaged to such an extent that the strength of the stakes is affected. 02540-3
