riprap will be required and must be approved by the Owner. The Contractor,
at his option, may use rock filled gabions wherever riprap is called for on the
Drawings. Rock used to fill gabion baskets may be angular or may be river
^~ rock of approximately 4 to 8 inch stone size conforming to Part 2.03D of
' ~ this Specification.
PART 2 -MATERIALS
'- 2.01 General
Rock furnished for dumped riprap shall be hard, durable, angular in shape; resistant
to weathering and to water action; free from overburden, spoil, shale and organic
material and shall meet the gradation for the class specified. Neither breadth nar
thickness of s single stone should be less than one-third its length. Rounded stone
_ or boulders will not be accepted unless authorized by special provisions. Thin slab
stone or shale and stone with shale seams are not acceptable. Rock shall have a
minimum specific gravity of 2.65 and a minimum weight per stone of 165 pounds
per cubic foot as computed by multiplying the specific gravity (Bulk-Saturatecl-
j Surface-Dry Basis, AASHTO Test T85) times 62.4 pounds per cubic foot.
2.02 Gradation and Classification of Dumped Ripra~
A. General
C Each load of riprap shall be reasonably well graded from the smallest to tl~e
maximum size specified. Stones smaller than the specified 10% size grid
spells will not be permitted in an amount exceeding 10% by weight of each
load.
Control of gradation will be by visual inspection. The Contractor shall
provide two samples of rock of at least 5 tons each, meeting the gradation
C for the class specified. The sample at the construction site may be a part of
the finished raprap covering. These samples shall be used as a frequent
reference for judging the gradation of the riprap supplied. Any difference of
`_ opinion between the Engineer and the Contractor shall be resolved by
L dumping and checking the gradation of two random truck loads of stone.
Mechanical equipment, a sorting site, and labor needed to assist in checking
gradation shall be provided by the Contractor at no additional cost.
L B.
