2.05 General Backfill Material <br />General backfill materiel for utility trenches, structural excavations, etc., not <br />within embankments, shall be on~ite material free from wood, stones, roots, • <br />'- broken concrete, frozen chunks, or debris of any kind. Such backfi7l material must <br />also have the proper moisture content. <br />2.06 Base Course Material <br />Aggregate for base course shall be crushed stone, crushed slag, crushed gravel or <br />natural gravel which meets the grading requirements of Colorado State Highway <br />Department Qass 6 material as specified hereinafter. <br />Size (mm) sieve % Passing <br />19.1 3/4" 100% <br />4.76 #4 30 - 65% <br />2.38 #8 25 - 55% <br />0.074 #200 3 - 12% <br />The liquid limit for this material is to be less than 30 and the plasticity index shall <br />be less than 6 when tested in accordance with AASHTO T89 and T90 respectively. <br />PART 3 -EXECUTION <br />3.01 General <br />A. Clearing and Grubbing • <br />Prior to beginning excavation, grading and embankment operations in any <br />area, all necessary clearing and grubbing in that area shall have been <br />performed in accordance with Section 02102. <br />B. Stripping <br />1. The entire area to be occupied by embankments, foundations or <br />structures shall be stripped to a sufficient depth to remove unsuitable <br />materials, topsoil, rubbish, vegetable material, including stumps an~i <br />roots, and all other perishable and objectionable materials that might <br />interfere with the proper bonding of the embankment and the proper <br />compaction of the materials in the embankment, or that may b~e <br />otherwise objectionable, as specified in Section 02102. <br />2. Suitable topsoil from the stripping operation shall be stockp>Zed fo.r <br />use in topsoiling operations as detailed in Section 02102. <br />~C. The Contractor shall perform all grading, excavation, backfill and embank- <br />ment work required on the site to the lines, dimensions, contours, and eleva- <br />tions indicated on the Drawings. This work shall include foundation <br />excavating, spillway excavation, structural excavation, site grading, <br />trenching, preparation of foundations, providing for all necessary protectia~ <br />of the excavations, pumping and dewatering as necessary or required, . <br />backfilling and compacting of the embankment and other earthwork as <br />required. <br />022D0-5 <br />
