Midway Project Area:
This area has been hit HARD by rockhounds in the past (and even now)as it is a large tailing pile
created from the Midway Portal and tunnel beyond the bat-grate. They have caused the tailing
pile to move down the hillside. Last year we posted the area and have been monitoring it. We
have inspected the lowest boulders and rocks and the bottom, and fixed potential rockslides
from happening. We added soil between some boulders in some areas and created a "first
terrace"to prevent any further UUD. No plants grow in this pile due to the amount of acid-
producing rock that is within this pile.
It is our intent to reclaim this pile, sort it and move it to the west by 20-25 feet. This will allow
the slope to be terraced properly to not only allow for vegetation regrowth, but access if needed
for the Ridgetop Project Area during its reclamation.
The current width, depth and height of this tailing pile is as follows:
35 feet wide x 25 foot tall
2—20 feet in depth (depending on slope of the hillside)
It is our estimation that we will be moving/sorting/terracing approx.:
750 cubic yards of soil to be enriched with organic material
125 cubic yards of rock—to be used to provide underlying terrace foundation
Final contour goal is... something stable! Currently it is 25 feet in height and 25 feet in length. I
would like to flatten that out by increasing the width west and make it as close to 15 feet in
height to 25 feet in length as possible (which I think is 3H:1V).
Miners Mall is taking on the responsibility of this tailing pile and the current state that it is in.
We feel that we are correcting a future environmental situation be removing the acid-producing
material as we sort, as well as a physical hazard with the rockfall potential. Please take that in
light when processing our request. We could leave this as is, but it is within our claim and does
need to be addressed at some point. If we take the steps now to correct it, we can have
vegetation growing on it within a few years. We would like to add the first application of seed
this fall of the DRMS allows it.
The goal of this project is to stabilize and prevent any further UUD to this section of the claim.
Completion of this project are will leave the section in a re-vegetative state or allow soil to be
used for other areas to prevent the need for other soil to be trucked in during reclamation.
