CnK CONTINENTAL, MATERIALS CORPORATION
Response: Area H was backfilled using the process discussed herein. These processes were used for the
backfill, continue currently, and will be used in future backfilling operations.
The backfilling has been a controlled fill consisting mostly of crushed limestone by-products from
ongoing operations. Some imported materials were used in the backfill, as listed below. As material was
imported, it was sorted as"General Fill" or as potential topsoil. General Fill was placed with existing
limestone materials in equal proportions to aid a more uniform backfill, then pushed by dozer into
layers approximately one-foot thick and compacted by dozer travel and truck travel in the area.
The quarry has not been open to indiscriminate dumping. The materials were inspected prior to
permission being granted for any contractor to begin delivering to Pikeview. Only project specific
material was acceptable. As trucks delivered to Pikeview, they were directed each day by the scale
operator. Each driver then delivered his truckloads to Quarry floor throughout that day. As he reached
the dump area, the Quarry loader operator directed the exact spot to dump the material. At the point of
dumping the operator accepted or rejected the load. If the operator deemed the load to be unsuitable,
the driver would take the load out of the quarry and dispose of the material elsewhere under the
contractor's directions.
Equipment Operators and Drivers were instructed to report any soft spots or observations of soil not
being in a firm hard state suitable for driving and operating without movement underneath.A 988
Caterpillar Loader was recently used to proof roll the surface without observing any soil movement on
the existing quarry floor.
A Volvo 700 excavator was also used to excavate the area around the standpipes to inspect for
uniformity as we pushed material around the pipes in a smaller area not able to be backfilled and
compacted as discussed above.
The material placed in Area H has been accumulated from the sources listed below. The fill consisted of
clean, natural dirt with some rocks that were excavated from a variety of construction projects in the
greater Colorado Springs area. Only fill from pre-approved projects being performed by reputable
companies has been and will be accepted. The vast majority of the fill has been from large projects. The
fill was/will be inspected at the scale-house and as it is dumped.
• Quarry crusher fines and waste from Pikeview Operations
• Rock Rimmon Street reconstruction
• 30th Street Garden of the Gods Retention Project
• Multi Family Construction Project
• Douglas Creek Culvert
• Wilkinson Construction
• Tab Construction
Pikeview Quarry Amendment 4, Response to Adequacy
February 7, 2020
4
