Groundwater
levels were measured to within 2-3 feet below the rock surface. Based on results of Exponent’s
subsurface exploration, these groundwater levels are from a confined groundwater condition.
Near the top of the quarry, groundwater was observed in some drilling locations as summarized
in Appendix 44. Near the top (headscarp) of the December 2, 2008 landslide, groundwater was
encountered and monitored in a piezometer (P-2) installed west of the nearby fault in Pikes Peak
Granite and immediately east of the fault (P-1).
5.2.6 Rain Data
Rain data was collected to investigate the correlation between rainfall and groundwater levels.
Rain data from the Western Regional Climate Center was analyzed for two rain gages near
Pikeview Quarry. The Ruxton Park rain gage is located approximately 7.5 miles southwest of
the quarry. Colorado Springs Municipal Airport rain gage is located approximately 12.5 miles
southeast of the quarry. The stations were selected because of their close proximity to the
quarry and length of the data set available. Appendix 45 contains a map of the station locations
relative to the Pikeview Quarry and plots of the rain data for these gages on a daily basis and
running totals of 7, 28, 60, 90, and 120 days, which are reasonable durations for the site
conditions. The daily antecedent rainfall had been minimal as of December 2, 2008 when the
Pikeview Landslide commenced. Based on the running total data for 7, 28, 60, 90, and
120 days, no significant peaks were present as of December 2, 2008.
Additional rain data was collected to investigate the correlation between rainfall and
groundwater levels monitored during Exponent’s investigation. Because Western Regional
Climate Center data for the Ruxton Park and Colorado Springs Municipal Airport rain gages
was not available for this time period as of the writing of this report, rain data from Weather
Underground (www.wundergound.com) was collected for a nearby rain gage, the Mountain
Shadows Evergreen Rain gage. The data was incomplete for the longer periods and therefore
was not suitable for the rain analysis previously described. The Mountain Shadows Evergreen
Rain gage is located 0.8 miles southeast of the Pikeview Quarry. Appendix 45 contains a map
