Large gravel size particles were first
removed by hand, then the clay samples were compacted by tamper directly into the standard
stainless steel ring mold.
Rock core samples retrieved from the various members of Manitou and Sawatch Formations
were tested for their strength properties. Samples were selected to be representative of the
variability in the rock quality observed during the subsurface investigation. As an example, the
quality of samples from the basal Manitou Formation were observed to be substantially lower at
the bottom of the stratigraphic profile because of material heterogeneities, fracturing and
discontinuities; as a result, samples from this region were selected as well as samples
representative of zones of better quality limestone. Appendix 43 contains photographs of the
extracted cores from which specimens were extracted for testing. The tested rock specimens
were carefully prepared from rock cores. The cores were examined and photographed prior to
specimen extraction. The cores were then cut by stone cutting equipment to extract a specimen
approximately 5 to 6 inches tall, depending on the quality of the rock core. The specimens were
then tested by unconfined compression uniaxial testing. The testing results are consistent with
the visual observations of the Manitou Formation cores, namely, that the quality of the rock
varies widely, and therefore, the strength of the rock varies widely wherein the higher quality
samples had high strengths, and low quality samples had low strengths. The limestone samples
from the bottom of the stratigraphic profile showed the lowest strengths, consistent with the low
quality of the rock in this region of the profile.
5.2.5 Groundwater Conditions and Monitoring
Groundwater was encountered during Exponent’s subsurface exploration in Area H and at the
top of the quarry. Groundwater levels have been monitored in piezometers installed in core
locations and previously drilled shot holes. The locations of the piezomenters are shown on the
geologic map in Appendix 39. The monitoring has consisted of manual reading of groundwater
levels with a Slope Indicator Company water level indicator and with self contained water level
data loggers, Solinst Levelogger Gold and Solinst Barologger Gold. Appendix 44 contains the
groundwater monitoring data and status of the data loggers installed at Pikeview Quarry.
