September 25,2019 G1996-083/Bowie No. 2 Mine RDZ
Pond J was holding a significant volume of water(still a good 10 feet or more below the emergency spillway). It
receives seepage from the Fire Mountain Canal and from irrigation water. Basil Bear indicated that the problem
with irrigation water entering the pond has been addressed. A contractor will remove trees and shrubs from the
embankment, and this work is being directed by the power company(DMEA)because of overhead wires. This
structure should be watched closely for any signs of instability.
Ditch D-F4 still requires attention due to extensive erosion. BRL has stockpiled rocks and other material for
this project, but equipment problems have stalled the work. No problems were seen with other ditches.
The structures affiliated with the diversion gate at Curve 8 has been cleared of sediment.
PROCESSING WASTE/COAL MINE WASTE PILES—Rule 410 and 4.11
Drainage Control; Surface Stabilization; Placement:
No erosion or other problems were seen on Gob Pile#1.
Gob Pile#2 is graded well, and no erosion was seen on the hillside above it,below the diversion ditch. Two small
seeps were seen near the bottom of Gob Pile#2, approximately 100 feet up the hill from the VWP-09 piezometer
and the BG05-07 inclinometer. Cattails and white residue on the soil (a salt precipitate)were observed. BRL
needs to pay close attention to these and other seeps and address them in quarterly waste bank reports.
Work was being done on Gob Pile#3 on the morning of the inspection, and a great deal of material needed to be
spread and graded.
No issues were seen with Gob Pile#4. The reclaimed portions contain good vegetation cover.
ROADS—Rule 4.03
Construction 4.03.1(3)/4.03.2(3),Drainage 4.03.1(4)/4.032(4), Surfacing and Maintenance4.03.1(5)and
(6)/4.03.2(5) and(6),Reclamation 4.03.1(7)/4.03.2(7):
No problems were seen with roads, including the road to the Terror Creek Vent Shaft. The hillside above Curve 8,
which is armored with boulders, is stable.
REVEGETATION—Rule 4.15
Vegetative Cover; Timing:
Halogeton(a C list weed species)was seen again at Gob Pile#2. Basil Bear has suggested that he not treat it
because it provides erosion control. DBMS will take this under consideration, but BRL should watch closely to
see if this weed spreads, and,if so, use herbicide to stop it.
Number of Partial Inspection this Fiscal Year: 3
Number of Complete Inspections this Fiscal Year: 1
Page 3 of It
