Section 02140-Dewatering
PART 2-MATERIALS
2.01 COMPACTED EMBANKMENT SLOPE LINER
The embankment slope liner shall be constructed as zoned embankments in accordance with the detail
drawings. The majority of the embankments will be constructed with Zone 1 soils. The more clayey
material shall be placed in Zone IA,the central portion of the slope liner. The sandier material shall be
placed on the upstream slopes of the slope liner in Zone 113. Since some soil property specifications for
Zone I and I overlap, many on-site soils will be suitable for either zone.
A. Embankment Zone IA
Zone I will be constructed of clayey soils meeting the following criteria:
'35 percent or greater passing the No.200 sieve
'No more than 40%retained on the No.4 sieve
'Minimum plasticity index of 12%
'Unified Soils Classification: CL,SC,SC-GC,CL-CH
Sources for Zone I embankment soils may include the following on-site materials:
'Mud Lens
°In-place overburden
'Stockpiled overburden
'Clay fill
°Claystone bedrock with a liquid limit of less than 50
'Select zones of miscellaneous fill
The material shall be obtained from required excavations, borrow areas,or stockpiles. The soils
shall be free of any deleterious materials, including rocks larger than 5",as specified by the
Design Engineer. Oversize rock fragments shall be wasted as approved by the Design Engineer or
stockpiled for use in other zones when found to be acceptable to the Design Engineer.
B. Embankment Zone 1B
Zone I will be constructed principally of material meeting Zone I requirements or compacted
clayey sand soils meeting the following criteria:
'Between 18 to 55%passing the No.200 sieve
'No more than 60%retained on the No.4 sieve
'Unified Soils Classification: CL, SC,CL-SC,GC,SC-GC,SM-SC,GM,GM-GC
6/10 Section 02290-Page 1 of 6
