Boulders and fallen dead or felled timber (not harvested for firewood) will be arranged
approximately near their original locations to give the site a natural look. All work is aimed at
returning the area to look natural and undisturbed (after re-growth).
As detailed in Exhibit C—Mining Plan, large dumps will be avoided and reclamation efforts will
be reduced as the backfill, though rough, will be already replaced into the trenched area during
actual trenching using a cut ahead and fill behind cut and fill approach. Final recontouring,
topsoil replacement, raking, and seeding will be all that would remain after backfill from this
type of excavation.
Excavation, with concurrent backfilling, will take place first. When work is completed in a given
locality, reclamation work (consisting of re-contouring, topsoil replacement, raking, and
placement of felled trees and boulders), will be conducted prior to moving to the next locality.
Seeding would be conducted during the fall as recommended by USFS.
To re-iterate; area and volume-wise, over the life of the permit and operation, a maximum of
only 2.0 acres of topsoil replacement/final recontour work and seeding and up to 1,000 yards of
trench backfill work would be necessary at the close of each area or season or at the end of the
permit.
6.3.4. (1) (a)
All overburden will be backfilled into excavations proposed under this permit. Depths will very
likely not exceed 12 or 15 feet from original surface. Excavations will be backfilled and
recontoured to approximate their original surface contours and topsoil will be replaced to
approximately its original depth from topsoil stockpiles once an excavation site is backfilled.
Excavation of material is very limited. While some settling of backfilled materials over time is
expected, no depressions will remain. Recontoured areas will be slightly bowed since
excavated materials expand. Over a season or two, after being returned to the excavation site,
the backfilled materials will settle somewhat and any bulging will dissipate.
6.3.4. (1) (b)
The maximum gradient of backfilled and recontoured surface slopes will depend largely on the
original topography of the areas disturbed. Based on USGS DEMs and topographic maps,
recontoured slopes will not exceed 3:1 horizontal: vertical. In general, maximum slopes will be
4:1, horizontal: vertical or flatter. Original, pre-disturbance slope gradients will be maintained
and recontouring will match existing slopes.
In order to prevent undue erosion of reclaimed areas and promote seed and moisture
retention, recontoured disturbance will be raked (lightly furrowed) parallel to contours.
Silt fencing will be used below all excavation sites and disturbed areas which occur on slopes of
20 percent or greater(>_ 5:1 horizontal: vertical). Silt fences will be removed after 50 percent
growth is established.
Reclamation Permit Application for Ten Percenter Claim BLM CMC254209
USFS File Code 2810,USFS MPO-2018-004
