Limited - Results Archaeological Survey Form (Page 3 of 7)
IV. ENVIRONMENT
18. General Topographic Setting: Specifically, the proposed drill locations are within
Twentymile Park. WC008 is immediately adiacent to Foidel Creek. To the south is an
east -west trending ridge that separates Twentymile Park to the north and Eckman Park
to the south. The area is gently rolling terrain containing numerous north - flowing
intermittent drainages. These drainages flow into Fish Creek which flows north,
eventually emptying into the Yampa River.
Current Land Use: Limited livestock grazing, hunting activities, mining.
19. Flora: Vegetation varies depending on proximity of water and elevation. Grasses and
forbs dominate with intermixed sagebrush and scrub oak.
20. Soils /Geology: Surface sediments are predominantly alluvial in nature and consist of a
medium brown clayey loam. Subsurface geology is composed of sandstone, shale and
major coal beds of the Williams Fork Formation which are sedimentary and igneous
rocks from the Early Tertiary and Late Cretaceous Age (Tweto 1979).
21. Ground Visibility: Surface visibility was very good (85 -100 %) with mostly low grasses.
22. Comments: There are numerous opportunities to view subsurface contents via two -
tracks, animal trails, cut banks, rodent back dirt piles and eroded areas.
V. LITERATURE REVIEW
23. Location of File Search: Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation (OAHP)-
Compass online database
Dates: 08/18/2014
24. Previous Survey Activity - In the project area: No previous inventories cover any
significant portion of the project's direct area of potential affect (APE). One linear
survey (OAHP# RT.LM.R44) crosses the proposed access road to WCO28.
In the general region: Thirteen projects have been previously conducted within about
a mile of the project area (see Table 1 below). The vast majority are for mining- related
construction.
