MINING PLAN EXHIBIT D(CONT)
Russian Olive trees have invaded the area. The Russian Olive
trees will be removed during mining and any other trees outside
the area to be disturbed will remain. Access to the site is via
an existing driveway in the southwest corner of the property.
The driveway will remain when mining ends as access to the
industrial area The landowners may also grade a road across the
pre-law area to provide access from County Road 22W. A road will
remain when mining ends in this area .
GEOLOGIC SETTING
The affected lands are located in the Arkansas Valley approxi-
mately 2100 feet south of the river in a late Quaternary age,
valley fill alluvial deposit . The sand and gravel encountered in
the valley fill alluvium are a result of water erosion and
redeposition of rock materials from the front range of the Rocky
Mountains . The deposition of this material occurred during a
time when the river was much larger than it is now.
This type of material is typically found along the Arkansas River
in Otero County to the Colorado state line . Along this section
of the river, the deposit has an 80% sand, 20% rock ratio and
averages 22 feet deep .
SOILS AND O VERB URDEN
See the soils and vegetation information in EXHIBITI/J for detailed
information regarding the soils on this site . The soil informa-
tion is not site specific, it describes in general terms the
nature of the soils found at this site prior to mining and was
obtained from the USDA soil survey for Otero County.
Approximately 12 . 68 acres of this site is covered by water area
and 17 . 36 acres is the old Plant Site area where there is no
soil . The remaining 8 . 80 ac ± is the old overburden stockpile
area along the north side of the lake . Overlying the gravel
deposit on the stockpile area are piles of overburden and growth
medium that were placed there before the original Reclamation
Permit was issued in 1977 . Underlaying the stockpile area is a
layer of overburden that varies from 1 to 4 feet and the sand and
gravel , a portion of which will be mined. The topsoil\growth
medium, when encountered in the stockpiles, will be saved for use
then reclamation begins around the north end of the lake .
7
