Data Recovery Report for Three Sites at the Collom Project Colowyo Coal Company
The Reed and Metcalf (1999) chronology was utilized as the baseline chronology for the
undertaking. However, the region's archaeological record was not physically or culturally isolated
from surrounding areas at any time in prehistory. Researchers have reported material evidence
reflective of frequent population movement and/or interaction between regions across prehistory.
To account for the possible connections between broader regions, the Uinta Basin and Green
River Basin cultural chronologies were integrated into the analysis as appropriate (Table 2). The
Uinta Basin has undergone intensive research and development of a standalone cultural
chronological (Spangler 2000). Overall, the basin's chronology reflects a continuous, though
varyingly dense, prehistoric occupation with significant influences and/or direct utilization by
agricultural focused populations. The Wyoming Basin has been subjected to extensive research
and cultural resource work which has also led to the development of its own cultural chronology
(ex. Komfeld et al. 2010; Metcalf 1987; Creasman and Thompson 1997). The overall the basin's
archaeological record reflects a continuous occupation by hunter -gatherer populations throughout
prehistory. Basin population density is argued to vary through time and cultural influences and/or
inhabited by Great Basin and Plains cultural groups has been documented.
Table 2.
