Historic Properties Treatment Plan, Collom Mine, Colorado 32
Features when encountered will be exposed horizontally and recorded with a plan map and
photographs. After the delineation of the plan view, the feature will be cross- sectioned to
identify any internal stratification. The resulting profile will be drawn and photographed. The
rest of the fill will be excavated, with supplemental plan view drawings and photos when
applicable. Descriptive data categories specifically recorded on the feature form will include
feature morphology /type, dimensions; feature fill characteristics; the presence /absence and
nature of oxidation; artifacts and other remains from the feature fill; heat- altered rock number,
weight and size range by material type; preservation and intrusions; stratigraphic position and
matrix characteristics; and general remarks. Samples will be collected from features for
radiocarbon, plant macrofossil, and pollen analyses. A sample of feature fill will be collected
for plant macrofossil analysis from each feature. Radiocarbon samples will also be collected,
either as charcoal samples or as bulk sediment samples. Bulk fill samples will be double - bagged
in clean zip -lock bags. Radiocarbon samples will be placed in aluminum foil pouches. Any
feature fill not taken as samples will be screened through 1/16 -inch screen (window screen).
Heat - altered rock will be recorded for each level of each excavation unit and /or each feature.
It will be recorded in the field and then discarded. All heat - altered rock will be recorded by
general material type (e.g., sandstone, granite, etc.). Attributes to be recorded for each material
type will include count by size class, weight, and nature of alteration (e.g., heat - reddening,
degree of fragmentation, etc.). Size classes to be used for recording are <3 cm, 3 -5 cm, 5 -10 cm,
and >_ 10 cm. Rock fragments less than 1 x 1 x 1 cm in size will not be recorded, except for
noting their presence and relative abundance.
Artifacts greater than 5 cm in size will be point - plotted. All artifacts that are potentially
diagnostic of temporal or cultural context will also be point - plotted if identified in situ, with
particular attention paid to basal elevation. All recovered artifacts and samples will be recorded
on the excavation level form completed for each 10 -cm excavation level. Tools, large
identifiable bone elements, and other distinctive remains will be bagged individually and given
a separate field specimen number (P -NUM).
