Historic Properties Treatment Plan, Collorn Mine, Colorado 31
5.2 PHASE II DATA RECOVERY FIELD METHODS
Standard archaeological field procedures will be followed throughout the project. The
horizontal grid for the block will be oriented north /south; however, if for some reason the grid
is not oriented to true north, the appropriate grid directions (grid north, grid south, grid west,
grid east) will be used in lieu of compass directions in all descriptions and designations. The
basic unit of excavation and documentation will be a 1 x 1 -m excavation unit. Each 1 x 1 -m
excavation unit within the excavation block will be labeled using both the coordinates of its
southwest corner and a unique letter- number designation. All measurements for the
proveniencing of artifacts will be taken from the southwestern corner of the unit.
The vertical grid system for the excavation block will be established relative to a vertical datum
arbitrarily denoted as 100 -m elevation. The vertical grid will be structured in 10 -cm increments
relative to the vertical datum (e.g., 99.20 -99.10 m). The first level excavated in a given l x 1 -m
unit will be designated Level 1, the second level designated as Level 2, etc. All excavation
forms, record forms, artifacts bags, and sample bags will be labeled with both the level elevation
and the level number. Elevation subdatums will be set using a transit and checked regularly
with a transit. Line levels and /or transit will be used for taking elevations.
Excavations will proceed in 10 -cm levels. Exceptions may be where select units are excavated
stratigraphically to fine -tune the stratigraphic relationships between individual cultural layers,
if encountered. Each level of each 1 x 1 -m unit will be excavated separately. Shovels and
trowels will be used for all excavations, except for the extraction of features for which trowels,
brushes, and whisk brooms will be used. All excavated deposits will be screened through
1/8 -inch hardware cloth. An Excavation Level Form will be completed for each level. The
Excavation Level Form contains spaces for recording specific types of data for each 1 x 1 -m
excavation unit. The entire area of the excavation block will be excavated simultaneously to
facilitate the exposure of entire occupation surfaces.
47599 TRC Mariah Associates Inc.
