Historic Properties Treatment Plan, Collom Mine, Colorado 30
5.0 METHODS
5.1 PHASE I TESTING FIELD METHODS
The auger tests and 1 x 1 -m test units will be excavated at 10 -cm levels, with 0 -10 cm below
surface designated as Level 1, 10 -20 cm below surface designated as Level 2, etc. The entire
matrix of each level will be screened through 1/4 -inch wire mesh. (In some cases, auger probes
may be used in the base of 1 x 1 -m test units to allow for assessment of buried sediments). The
results of the excavation of each test unit or auger test will be detailed on an Excavation Level
Form or Auger Test Form. For the formal 1 x 1 -m test units, excavation in 10 -cm levels will
continue to a minimum of 20 cm below any level that contains cultural material.
Archaeological materials recovered from test units will be separated according to excavation
level and artifact type (e.g., bone, debitage, lithic tools) and recorded on a Test Unit Summary
form. Additional information recorded on this form will include a level -by -level description of
sediment types and changes, the presence or absence of charcoal and heat - altered rock, and other
details. Following termination of the test unit, a stratigraphic profile of two adjacent test unit
walls will be sketched, sediment descriptions will be recorded for each identified stratum,
photographs will be taken, and then the test unit will be backfilled.
If a feature (he,, hearth, stained basin) is encountered during the excavation of the test unit, it
will be exposed horizontally and recorded with a plan view map and photographs. The feature
will then be cross - sectioned, and a drawing of the resultant profile will be completed. Samples
for flotation and radiocarbon analyses will be collected from the fill. Feature data recorded in
the field will include type; form; shape in plan and both transverse and longitudinal cross
section; dimensions; volume; feature fill characteristics; number, weight, and types of fill rock;
presence or absence of charcoal and oxidation; associated artifacts; and associated faunal and
botanical remains. In addition, thermal features exposed on the surface will be excavated as part
of the Phase I testing.
47599 TRC Mariah Associates Inc.
