Pre -Construction Materials Testing
Huddleston -Berry
11J F -o so<om.z i.rmn, i i c
1) Specific materials proposed to be used for the liner construction will be
evaluated by Huddleston -Berry to ensure conformance with the design
and applicable regulations. In accordance with the referenced Solid
Waste Guidance Document, laboratory testing will be conducted on
proposed borrow materials as summarized in the following table:
TABLE 1
Total Liner Volume <2,000 yd
Testing
Test Method
Required Frequency
Required # of
per Guidance
Tests for
Document
Compliance
Water Content (oven
ASTM D2216
1 per 2,620 yd
1
dried)
Atterberg Limits
ASTM D4318
1 per 6,540 yd
1
Fines Content
ASTM D1140
1 per 6,540 yd
1
(Hydrometer)
Grain Size Distribution
ASTM D422
1 per 6,540 yd
1
Proctor'
ASTM D698,
1 per 6,540 yd
3 (see note 1)
ASTM D1557
Specific Gravity2
ASTM D854
1 per material type
1
Hydraulic Conductivity
ASTM D5084
1 per 13,080 yd
1
Direct Shear
ASTM D3080
"See note 3
1
' Guidance Document states that only 1 Proctor required for proposed borrow materials
and that Line of Optimums should be developed during construction; however, HBET
believes it is critical to develop Line of Optimums prior to construction.
2 Guidance Document states that Specific Gravity determination should be completed
during construction; however, Specific Gravity required to develop Line of Optimums.
3 Direct shear required to determine maximum water content that can be used during
compaction such that liner material has sufficient shear strength.
2) For the native soils proposed to be used as liner material, the testing will
initially include grain size analysis, Atterberg limits determination, Proctor, and
hydraulic conductivity to determine whether or not the native soils can meet
the Hydraulic Conductivity specification of 1x10-7 cm/sec. Where the native
soils are determined to be capable of meeting the specification, the remainder
of the borrow material testing will be completed as outlined in the above table.
Appendix U 2
