3.5
Seed in two passes at right angles to one another. Sow half the seed in each pass. Provide
markers or other means to assure that the successive seeded strips will overlap or be
separated by a space no greater than the space between the rows planted by the
equipment being used. Do not seed during windy weather.
1. In areas inaccessible to a drill seeder, broadcast seed by hand or with a spreader in two
opposite directions. Rake in seed after broadcasting. Do not broadcast or drop seed when
wind velocity exceeds 5 mph (8 km/h).
2. In non -irrigated grass areas, do not sow seed in tree or shrub watering rings.
3. Do not use wet seed or seed that is moldy or otherwise damaged.
B. Seed Rates: Refer to Table 02900-1 for specified rates.
C. Protect seeded areas with slopes exceeding 4:1 (Horizontal:Vertical) with erosion -control
blankets installed and stapled according to manufacturer's written instructions.
MULCHING
A. Hydromulch: Following drill seeding, mix specified tackifier, mycorrhizal inoculums,
and fiber mulch in water, using equipment specifically designed for hydroseed
application. Continue mixing until uniformly blended into homogeneous slurry suitable
for hydraulic application.
1. Apply slurry uniformly to all areas to be seeded in a two-step process.
a) Apply first slurry at the following application rate:
1) 1,500 lb/acre of 100 percent long stranded wood fiber mulch
2) 150 lb/acre of plantago psyllium based tackifier
3) 60 lb/acre of mycorrhizal inoculum
B. All hydroseed mixing shall be performed in a clean tank to minimize the introduction of
non -target species. The tank and hoses shall be rinsed thoroughly rinsed the satisfaction
of the Engineer. The hydroseeder must be equipped with a built-in continuous agitation
and recirculation system of sufficient operating capacity to produce homogeneous slurry,
and a discharge system that will apply slurry in the designated area at a continuous and
uniform rate.
C. The slurry preparation shall take place at the project site and shall be started by adding
water to the tank while the agitators are running at full throttle. Hydroseed applications
shall be applied in an arch stream using a fan shaped nozzle to prevent erosive spraying.
END OF SECTION 02900
Reclamation, Topsoiling and Seeding February 2017 02900-4
