Section 02210 Erosion and Sediment Controls
PART 1 — GENERAL
1.1 SECTION INCLUDES
A. Furnishing, installing, maintaining, and removing temporary facilities as needed to
minimize erosion, to divert stormwater runoff away from disturbed areas, and to retain
sediment from small disturbed areas where stormwater runoff cannot be directed away
from potential bodies of water.
1.2 DEFINITIONS
A. Best Management Practices (BMPs): Measures for stabilization, sediment and erosion
control, and storm water management, which can generally be broken down into two
categories: structural and non-structural. Examples of non-structural BMPs including
minimizing removal of established vegetation, good housekeeping, preventative
maintenance, management of runoff, employee training, record keeping and reporting,
and visual inspections. Examples of structural BMPs are ground cover and vegetation,
detention ponds, silt fence, earth berms, Triangular Silt Dike m, and turf reinforcement
mats.
B. Silt Fence: A temporary sediment barrier consisting of geotextile which is stretched
across and supported by posts, and buried along the bottom.
C. Temporary Diversion: A combination dike and ditch, constructed upslope of disturbed
areas to divert run-on, and across the base of disturbed areas to collect sediment -laden
runoff and convey runoff to sediment traps.
D. Level Spreader: A non-erosive outlet constructed to disperse concentrated run on flow to
sheet flow, and distribute flow uniformly over a stabilized area.
E. Sediment Trap: A small, temporary ponding basin formed by an embankment or
excavation to capture sediment, with a gravel outlet; used to trap sediment from drainage
areas 3 acres or smaller in size.
F. Sediment Basin: A temporary ponding basin formed by constructing an embankment of
compacted soil, with a controlled stormwater release structure; used to trap sediment
from drainage areas 10 acres or small in size.
PART 2 — PRODUCTS
2.1 SILT FENCE GEOTEXTILE
A. Type: Synthetic filter fabric or pervious sheets of polypropylene, nylon, polyester, or
polyethylene yarn, recommended by the manufacturer for use in silt fence applications.
Erosion and Sediment Controls February 2017 02210-1
