2.2 SILT FENCE POSTS AND SUPPORTING FENCING <br />A. Silt Fence Posts: <br />1. Posts for 4 feet maximum post spacing shall be 2 inch square nominal size or heavier <br />wood posts, or standard "T" or "U" section steel posts weighing not less than 1 lb per <br />linear foot. <br />2. Posts for 10 feet maximum post spacing shall be 4 inch square nominal size or <br />heavier wood posts, or steel posts as specified above. <br />B. Supporting Fencing: Supporting fence shall be wire mesh (14 gauge minimum, 1 inch <br />maximum mesh openings), show fence, plastic fence, or approved equal. <br />PART 3 — EXECUTION <br />3.1 Contractor is responsible for furnishing installing and maintaining erosion and sediment <br />controls with the Work area in compliance with applicable permits. <br />3.2 Contractor shall employ best management practices (BMPs) to control the discharge or <br />migration of sediment from disturbed areas. <br />3.3 SILT FENCE <br />A. Do not install silt fence in large drainage channels. Silt fence may be used to provide <br />sediment and erosion control in disturbed areas meeting the following criteria: <br />1. Drainage area less than 1 acre. <br />2. Slope length less than 100 feet. <br />3. Slope less than 1H:1V. <br />4. Maximum concentrated flow in small swales less than 0.5 cubic feet per second. <br />B. Contractor shall be responsible for determining the post spacing for silt fences to <br />minimize maintenance. Fence posts shall be embedded a minimum of 24 -inches into the <br />soil. <br />C. Supporting fence shall be fastened securely to posts with staples or wire ties. <br />D. Geotextile fabric shall be fastened securely to the upslope side of the supporting fence <br />using wire ties spaced at 2 feet centers along the top and mid-section. When a supporting <br />fence is not used, geotextile shall be securely fastened to posts with staples or wire ties. <br />Fabric shall be anchored into the soil using a 6 -inch X 6 -inch anchorage trench. <br />E. Ensure that the top height of the silt fence does not exceed 36 inches above the ground <br />surface. <br />Erosion and Sediment Controls February 2017 02210-2 <br />
