1. When Engineer determines that unforeseen unsatisfactory subgrade conditions are <br />present, continue excavation and replace with compacted backfill or fill material as <br />directed. <br />2. Unforeseen additional excavation and replacement material will be paid according to <br />the Contract provisions for changes in Work. <br />G. Unauthorized Excavation: Fill unauthorized excavation under slabs, foundations, or wall <br />footings by extending indicated bottom elevation of concrete foundation or footing to <br />excavation bottom, without altering required top elevation, at no additional cost to <br />Owner. <br />1. Lean concrete fill (Class 2 Concrete per Section 03300) may be used to bring <br />elevations to proper position when acceptable to the Engineer. <br />2. Fill unauthorized excavations under other construction as directed by the Engineer. <br />H. Temporary Storage of Excavated Materials: Stockpile excavated materials meeting the <br />specified requirements for embankment as necessary prior to incorporating in the Work <br />or disposal in Owner -designated Spoil Fill areas. <br />1. Stockpile materials without intermixing. <br />2. Place, grade, and shape stockpiles to drain surface water. Prevent wind-blown dust. <br />3. Stockpile materials away from edge of excavations. <br />3.4 SUBGRADE PREPARATION <br />A. Remove any slaked, loose, or softened subgrade materials to receive structures, <br />embankment or backfill. <br />3.5 EMBANKMENT AND BACKFILL <br />A. General: Earthen (soil and rock) backfill materials shall be deposited and spread in <br />horizontal layers. Placing, moistening, and compacting operations shall be such that the <br />material will be uniformly compacted and will be homogeneous, free from lenses, <br />pockets, streaks, voids, laminations, or other imperfections. <br />B. Backfill excavations promptly, but not before completing the following: <br />1. Inspection of construction below finish grade. <br />2. Concrete form work removal. <br />3. Removal of trash and debris from excavation. <br />4. Removal of temporary shoring and bracing and sheeting. <br />Earthwork February 2017 02200-7 <br />
