Storm Water Management Plan (SWMP), September 2012
GCC Energy – King Coal & King II Mines
8

 Maintain clean equipment, no excessive amounts of oil and grease buildup

 Use drip pans or absorbents where repairs are performed outside and in
potential problem areas

 Store mechanical parts and equipment under cover, when possible

Monthly inspections of the facility involve the following:
 Check maintenance of earthen berms (clearwater and drainage ditches) using
visual checks for berm integrity; repair and remove sediment as necessary
 Check levels in sediment pond and all sediment traps; clean out sediment if
necessary
 Check drainage ditches, inlets and culverts for blockage.
4.3 Good Housekeeping
Good housekeeping procedures are followed at the GCC Facility to keep the
facility clean and orderly, thereby minimizing the potential for pollutants to enter
storm water runoff. This includes:
 Maintain surface water control structures and secondary containment
berms;
 Keep storage areas clean and orderly;
 Avoid spills of fuel or other vehicle fluids;
 Promptly clean up spills and leaks using dry methods (e.g., absorbents) to
prevent the discharge of pollutants;
 Keep heavy equipment in good repair to eliminate chronic drips and leaks;
 Regular observation and clean-up of the maintenance area;
 Recycle or dispose of the following in the correct manner: greases, oils,
antifreeze, brake fluid, all cleaning solutions, hydraulic fluid, batteries,
transmission fluid, worn parts, filters and rags
 Regular pickup and disposal of waste materials and scrap equipment
 Ensure that hazardous materials are appropriately containerized and
labeled
 Inspect containers frequently to ensure that the containers are not
damaged by the weather, vehicle traffic, etc.
 A concrete washout, north of the sediment pond, has been created and is
contained with erosion bales; signage is present indicating its usage; the
washout is cleaned out and maintained as necessary
 Coal dust is minimized by enclosing conveyor belts and placing dust
shields over windows on coal silos
4.4 Materials Handling and Spill Prevention
The King Coal Mine no longer stores any materials. The King II Mines has the
following materials handling and spill prevention procedures in place:
