including irrigation ditches, historic roads/trails, sheepherder camps, and well locations are also
present in the general area.
III. PROJECT LOCATION
Please attach a photocopy of USGS Quad. clearly showing the project location. The Quad. should be
clearly labeled with the Prime Meridian, Township, Range, Section(s), Quad. map name, size, and date.
Please do not reduce or enlarge the photocopy.
14. Description: _Dan Green and David Johnson (crew chief) of Western Archaeological Services (WAS)
conducted a Class III inventory of the proposed haul road terminal segment block area on December 10,
2014 (Figure l). A 40 acre block including a 100 ft. buffer around the perimeter was inventoried (Figures
2 and 3). The Class III inventory was conducted using standard 15 in spacing between field personnel.
No prehistoric or historic cultural resources were encountered as a result of the inventory.
15. General Topographic Setting: _The proposed terminal segment of the haul road is located along
the flood plain of Wilson Creek a tributary of Milk Creek which is a tributary of the Yampa River. The
inventory area is located on the north side of an interfluvial ridge which separates Wilson Creek and
Taylor Creek. Topography slopes gently to the north.
Current Land Use: Modern developments in the general area are extensive, including the
existing Colowyo surface coal mine facilities including a railroad loadout facility, loop railroad spur, coal
stockpile area and mine haul roads. The area has seen recent use for agriculture. The area immediately
west of the current inventory area was used for the growing of crops including wheat. No current
agricultural activity was noted.
19. Flora: Vegetation in the general study area is predominately sagebrush, grasses, shadscale, and
cactus. Greasewood and saltbush are common in the poorly -drained, alkaline soils in the drainage bottom.
The area immediately west of the current inventory had been used as agricultural land relatively recently.
In this area, the native vegetation has been removed but is now starting to reestablish itself. Native
vegetation is present across the current inventory area indicating that if the area was used for farming, it
was in the more distant past than the areas to the west and north of the inventory area.
20. Soils/Geology: _Soil is a brown sandy -silt with numerous chert pebbles and gravels. No significant
eolian deposits are present in the inventory area.
21. Ground Visibility: Vegetation_ ground cover ranges from 25% to 50% coverage
22. Comments:
