V. LITERATURE REVIEW
23. Location of File Search: —A file search was obtained from Compass, the on-line data base provided by
the Colorado Historical Society, Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation, on May 13, 2013.
Brian Naze, BLM Little Snake Field Office archaeologist, provided locational site information from the
BLM files on December 8, 2014. The files at WAS were also consulted.
Date: December 9, 2014
24. Previous Survey Activity - In the project area: _Six Class III inventories have been conducted in
Section 22, T4N, R93W, all of which are associated with the Colowyo mine. These projects include the
Colowyo Coal Co. Danforth Hills 1995 Lease and Exploration Area, Drilling Program and Conveyor
System (Metcalf Archaeological Consultants 1995); the Cultural Resource Investigations in the Danforth
Hills Proposed Coal Lease Area (Nickens and Associates 1984); the W. R. Grace & Co. Railroad
Corridors and Colowyo Mine Site (University of Colorado -Boulder 1975); the Proposed Lease Addition
and Conveyor Corridor at the Colowyo Mine (Nickens and Associates 1988); the Colowyo Coal Co.
Railroad Spur (Laboratory of Public Archaeology, Colorado State University 1981); and the Colowyo
Coal Co. Railroad Spur inventory (Laboratory of Public Archaeology, CSU 1981). None of the previous
inventories completely cover the current inventory area. The entire block was inventoried for this project
In the general region: Numerous inventories associated with the Colowyo surface coal mine have
been conducted in the general region, especially to the south of the current inventory area.
25. Known Cultural Resources - In the project area: _Five sites and four isolated artifacts have been
recorded in Section 22, T4N, R93W (see Figure 1). Site 5MF365 is a prehistoric open camp. The site
was recorded by University of Colorado — Denver in 1974. There is no NRHP assessment on the site
form. The site is located approximately 1700 feet east of the current inventory area and will not be
impacted by this project. Site 5MF466 is a prehistoric open camp which was recorded by University of
Colorado — Boulder in 1975. The site is Officially Not Eligible for nomination to the NRHP. The site
plot places it under the existing coal stockpile approximately 200 feet east of the inventory area. The site
has been destroyed. Site 5MF2662 is a prehistoric open camp which was recorded by Nickens and
Associates in 1988. The site is officially not eligible for nomination to the NRHP and is 2700 feet
southeast of the inventory area. It will not be impacted by construction activities. Site 5MF4003 is a
prehistoric open camp and historic homestead. The site was recorded by Metcalf Archaeological
Consultants in 1995 and revisited by TRC Mariah in 2005. The site is evaluated as Officially Needs Data.
The site is located approximately 1100 feet west of the current inventory area and will not be impacted by
construction activities. Site 5MF4004 is a prehistoric open camp which was recorded by Metcalf
Archaeological Consultants in 1995 and revisited by TRC Mariah in 2005. The site is officially not
eligible for nomination to the NRHP. The site is located approximately 800 feet south of the current
inventory area and will not be impacted by construction activities.
The 1885 General Land Office original survey map for Section 22, T4N, R93W, was consulted for
any historic roads, cabins, or other historic features (Figure 4). One historic feature, dotted line, is shown
on the map extending from southeast to northwest across the south half of Section 22, ending in the SW'/4
of Section 16 at the Charles Wilson homestead. This dotted line is not labeled but may be a pack trail. It
is not depicted as a road.
The 1906 GLO dependent resurvey plat indicates that a network of roads has developed to the
north of the Axial townsite which is located in the S W'/4 of Section 26, approximately 1.5 miles southeast
