Morton Lakes DRM&S Permit # M-2008-082 TR -003
Overview of Morton Lakes Technical Revision (TR -003)
On March 26, 2009 the Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining &
Safety (Division) approved Ready Mixed Concrete Company's (RMCC)
112c mining and reclamation permit for the Morton Lakes Pit (DRM&S
Permit # M-2008-082). The purpose of this Technical Revision (TR -003) is
to revise the sequence of Morton Lakes Mining Stages.
Recently, RMCC requested and was granted approval of TR -002 by
the DRMS. TR -002 changed the Morton Mining Stage 5 to Mining Stage 2
and changed the original reclamation plan for Stage S (2) from a sealed pit to
wildlife habitat. Following excavation of Stage S (2) this stage is to be
backfilled with wash fines from the Morton sand and gravel processing
plant. Once filled with fines, the backfilled stage will be seeded with the
DBMS approved Wash Fines Basin Seed Mix.
As mining the new Stage 2 progressed this summer it became obvious
to RMCC that only the southerly 12 acres of the stage was mineable. The
remaining (northerly) 4 acres of Stage 2 is unminable due to multiple layers
of clay and mud throughout this part of the sand and gravel deposit.
Therefore, RMCC is seeking DRMS approval for TR -003 by which the
company will mine approximately eleven (11) of the 36 acres of Morton
Stage 3 (see attached map). The portion of Stage 3 to be mined is located at
the far south end of the Stage, immediately east of the sand and gravel
processing plant. Once mined out, this portion of Stage 3 will temporarily be
used to stockpile processed sand and gravel on the pit floor. The reclamation
of Stage 3 will remain unchanged, namely municipal water storage.
As previously approved by the Division, RMCC will use Stage 2 to
dispose of sand and gravel wash fines that otherwise would have been
pumped, over the South Platte River, to a disposal site on the east side of the
river.
September 21, 2016 1
