Spring 2016 Subsidence and Geologic Field Observations
South of Divide and Dry Fork Mininq Areas
The portion of this traverse south of Dry Fork currently provides access to three MVB pads above
E -seam Longwall Panels E5 and E6 (i.e., E5-15, E5-16, and E6-12). At the time of our spring
2016 field visit, longwall mining had occurred beneath E5-15 and E5-16 (see Map 1).
As Traverse D -D' continues southward up Poison Gulch, it passes USFS pond P95 where a side
access road leads west and then north to the large MVB E5-16 pad. A previously observed slump
on the cut slope side of the road leading to this pad remains evident but shows signs of weathering
and healing. Subsidence cracks noted on the MVB E5-16 pad also remain present but are difficult
to clearly define.
Continuing south, Traverse D -D' provides access to the MVB E5-15 and E6-12 pads. No
subsidence -related features were observed along the access road to, or on, these pads. Of note was
a sizeable differential settlement crack with orientation N5°W on the west edge of the MVB E6-
12 pad where the greatest fill material has been placed (Figure 3). This nearly continuous crack
was observed from the access road connection to the north end of the pad (a distance of nearly 300
feet). This feature is associated with settlement because longwall mining had not yet passed
beneath this area at the time of our spring 2016 field visit.
4.5 Traverse E -E'
This traverse originates from Traverse A -A' and continues southward to an intersection with
Traverse F -F' and then west and south above mined E -seam Longwall Panel E5 and unmined E -
seam Longwall Panels E6, E7, and the northern edge of E8 where it terminates at Lick Creek.
Traverse F -F' leaves this traverse in a southeasterly direction over the east end of mined E -seam
Longwall Panels E5 and E6. This latter traverse is discussed in Section 4.6. Overburden along
this traverse varies from about 900 to 1,020 feet.
Traverse E -E' allows access to MVBs E5-9/10 through E5-14 above mined E -seam Longwall
Panel E5, as well as access to MVBs E6-8/9 through E6-11 (see Map 1) above unmined E -seam
Longwall Panel E6. Each of these MVB pads was observed during the spring 2016 field visit.
831-032.798 Wright Water Engineers, Inc. Page 13
August 2016
