September 15, 2015 C-1982-057/Seneca II -W Mine JHB
SCC has completed replacement, levelling or maintenance of sediment pond flumes for the 2015 season.
Pond 16 flume has been cleared of sediment and vegetation and is flowing well. This flume is not completely
level, but a reasonable flow can be determined. When flow is low, SCC uses the bucket & stopwatch method to
measure the discharge flow rate. The discharge on 9/15 was less than 0.01 on the staff gauge on the flume. Flow
measurement at this low flow is inaccurate due to scale increments and the flume size. Large trout have
previously been observed swimming and rising in this pond. Due to the windy weather conditions, only two trout
were observed on the afternoon of 9/15. Pond 16 receives a perennial flow of spoil spring water.
Spoil spring east of Pond 16 was flowing steadily. Orange staining was observed on the rocks near this spring.
Scratching the rocks appears that this orange staining may be an algae.
Two of the 7 spoil springs in the well cluster, W-25, were leaking with artesian flow (Photos 9 &10). Dennis
Jones was notified of these leaks. Follow up with Scott Cowman on 9/17, Scott informed the inspector that the
valves had been tightened and they were no longer leaking at the previous flow. SCC will be winterizing these
wells before long.
Drainages PM -2C and unnamed drainage north of PM -2C were holding up well. Vegetation establishment on this
area was diverse with a good stand of sagebrush. PM -213-1 surge tank was holding a pool of water, but was well
below the discharge elevation.
The contour ditch between Surge Tank PM -213-1 and Stock Tank T-27 has breached. Evidence of rilling on the
north side of the ditch was noted. SCC needs to repair the breached sections of the contour ditch. PM -213-2
Surge tank was dry.
PM -6 drainage was in good repair.
PM -2A drainage looked good. No additional head -cutting was noted. Repairs looked effective. A gully is
beginning to form on the west side of PM -2A drainage (Photo 6 & 7). Runoff from this gully flows into the
undisturbed area. SCC needs to redirect the runoff away from this gully to reduce further development of
this feature. Approximate length of this feature is —200 feet long and ranges from 12"-18" deep.
Pond 5 flume has been replaced and levelled. Pond 5 was not discharging (Photo 11). No problems were
identified with pond 5. Stock tank -24 was dry, Stock tank -22 was flowing slightly. T-22 has cattails and a rocked
discharge outlet. This stock tank is functioning well. T-20 was holding no water. Stock tank T-18 was holding
water but was not discharging. Drainages in the 005 watershed were holding up well.
Pond 6 was discharging clear. Vegetation has been cut back from the Pond 6 flume. The flume remains
unleveled. An accurate flow measure was not able to be read due to the slight cant to the flume. Flow appeared to
be about 1/2" deep on the lower side of the flume.
ROADS — Rule 4.03
Number of Partial Inspection this Fiscal Year: 2
Number of Complete Inspections this Fiscal Year: 1
Page 3 of 8
